China’s ferrochrome production capacity has reached a massive scale, creating strong rigid demand for chrome ore. Due to China’s scarce chrome resources, import dependency has surged significantly. In recent years, with the continuous development of industrial chain cooperation, an increasing number of alloy enterprises have shifted part of their development focus overseas, gradually diminishing the presence of pure chrome traders. The sustained growth of China’s stainless steel production has intensified ferrochrome consumption demand, creating favorable conditions for price increases in chrome-based products. Meanwhile, news about chrome export tariffs and policies has frequently stirred market sentiment. The “cliff-like” production cuts by South Africa’s two major ferrochrome suppliers have profoundly impacted the global ferrochrome supply chain. In the final year of the 14th Five-Year Plan, alloy stockpiling plans have become a “small interlude” in the ferrochrome market. Driven by cost and demand, ferrochrome prices continue to rise.
In 2025, the supply volume of nickel mines in the Philippines increased by over 10% year-on-year, with strong supply and demand in the overall market, and nickel ore prices remained firm. In Indonesia, the supply of domestic nickel ore consistently maintained a tight rhythm. Although the construction pace of nickel pig iron and new energy plants slowed down, the premium remained at a relatively high level. In 2026, Indonesia intends to restrict the further expansion of nickel product capacity by limiting the issuance of RAKB, but it will also provide more countries with opportunities to export to Indonesia. Nickel pig iron supply is in surplus, prices are declining, domestic nickel pig iron plants are further shrinking, and some plants in Indonesia have suspended or shifted production. However, new production lines in some industrial parks with cost advantages are still advancing.
In 2025, the overall stainless steel market exhibited a wide-range fluctuating pattern. In the first half of 2025, driven by rising prices of raw materials such as nickel pig iron and ferrochrome, along with favorable macro policies, prices climbed upward. Subsequently, due to US tariff hikes, weakening demand, and high inventory levels, prices declined rapidly. Entering the second half of the year, the market trend remained unsatisfactory, with the supply-demand imbalance persisting. The main contracts continuously broke through support levels, and low-range fluctuations with minor rebounds became normalized. Even by year-end, the pressure on prices and transactions had not significantly improved. In 2026, new production capacities from PT GLORY METAL INDONESIA and Hangzhou Iron&Steel Group Company stainless steel projects will commence operation and ramp up output, increasing supply. The low-profit structure of stainless steel is likely to continue, but this also provides some demand-side benefits for upstream alloy raw materials.
The global “carbon peaking and neutrality” transition has entered a critical period. Cobalt and lithium, as core strategic resources for power batteries and energy storage systems, are facing a dual critical period of “demand explosion and structural reshaping”. In 2025, with the continuous increase in new energy vehicle penetration rate and the explosive growth of the energy storage market, the lithium market has bottomed out and rebounded, returning to the 100,000 Yuan mark. It is expected that from 2026 to 2027, with the tightening of supply and demand, the market will enter a new phase of tight balance.
